Is Chicken Good on the Keto Diet?

The keto diet may be known for its high fat content, but protein plays an important role as well.

Chicken is a great source of protein. It’s also rich in many vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6, phosphorus and selenium. Chicken is a good choice for keto dieters.

What Cut of Chicken is Best for the Keto Diet?

Do you prefer light meat or dark meat? Either are good choices on the keto diet.

Chicken breast the leanest cut, and it is usually more expensive than dark meat.

Chicken thighs have a higher fat content and more flavor. They are often cheaper than chicken breasts. I prefer cooking with chicken thighs because they are juicier and more flavorful. And, they are more budget-friendly!

Tips for Cooking Chicken

Cooking tips will vary depending on the recipe and cooking recipe. But regardless of the cooking method, you need to make sure that the meat is fully cooked for food safety.

Many people say that chicken is fully cooked when the juices run clear and the meat is no longer pink.

This is good advice, but I like to measure doneness by reading the internal temperature of the meat. A temperature reading of 165 degrees is the safest indicator of doneness.

When cooking a chicken breast or chicken thigh, place the thermometer in the middle of the thickest part of the meat. When cooking a whole bird, place the thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh meat — but make sure to avoid touching the bone for the most accurate reading.
