Polaris Sportsman 500 Solenoid Wiring Diagram Explained (2024)

A solenoid is essential to regulate the adequate power flow from the battery to the starter motor.

If you have a faulty solenoid, the motor won’t activate. In this case, you must replace the solenoid. However, many ATV users find replacing it confusing because of multiple wiring.

So, how is the Polaris Sportsman 500 solenoid wiring diagram?

Polaris Sportsman 500 solenoid has 2 large terminals and two small terminals. A red wire connects one of the large terminals to the battery’s positive terminal. Another large terminal is connected to the starter motor. One of the small terminals is connected to an ignition switch, while the last terminal is for grounding.

Major confusion often arises with the wire colors. Keep reading for their easiest explanation.

Polaris Sportsman 500 Solenoid Wiring Diagram

The solenoid of Polaris Sportsman has four wires attached to it. These wires are for the battery, ignition key, starter motor, and ground. The following diagram will give you an overall idea of the wiring system of the Polaris Sportsman 500 solenoid.

Polaris Sportsman 500 Solenoid Wiring Diagram Explained (1)

The Battery

One positive or red wiring is connected from your Polaris Sportsman battery’s positive terminal to the solenoid. Another green wire from the negative side of the battery goes to the grounding.

The Solenoid

The solenoid or starter relay of the Polaris Sportsman 500 is located just in front of the battery or the left rear wheel. It has four terminals. Among them, two terminals are larger than the other two.

The 6 gauge red wire coming from the positive side of the battery is connected to one of the larger studs of the solenoid.

A 0.5 mm fusible link is also connected to the grey wire in this stud. The purpose of this gray wire is to keep the system safe from irregular power flow.

Another 6 gauge red wire from the solenoid goes to the starter motor to power the motor. This positive wire is connected to another larger stud of the solenoid.

One of the smaller terminals is connected with a red or white wire that goes to the ignition switch or starter switch. This wire activates the solenoid when the starter switch is turned on.

Finally, another smaller terminal is connected with a brown wire on the bottom. This is the solenoid’s ground wire.

Starter Motor

One 6 gauge red wire from the solenoid comes to this motor. The solenoid works as a bridge between the starter motor and the battery. It helps flow the accurate power from the battery to the starter motor.

Ignition switch

Once the ignition switch is engaged, it sends a message to the solenoid to work. Another wire from the ignition key goes to the battery.

These components are included in the Polaris Sportsman 500 solenoid wiring diagram. A solenoid will come with the wires. You have to connect those wires with the other components mentioned above.

FAQs

What Are The Symptoms Of A Faulty Solenoid?

Initially, a faulty solenoid can make your ATV sluggish. You will have trouble turning off the starter motor once engaged. Moreover, trouble shifting gears and popping up warning lights are common symptoms. Eventually, the starter motor will stop functioning.

How Long Should A Solenoid Last?

An ATV solenoid should last around three years. Good quality solenoids come with a 1-year replacement warranty.

Will A Stuck Solenoid Drain A Battery?

No, a stuck solenoid should not drain the battery. However, the battery will keep draining if your starter motor has a problem with disengaging because of a stuck solenoid.

Conclusion

I hope this article gave you a clear idea of the Polaris Sportsman 500 solenoid wiring diagram. Now it should be easier to connect the wires by yourself.

Solenoids are not very expensive. Try to replace it every three years to avoid having trouble with the starter motor.

That’s all for now. Best of luck with your ATV, and have a great day.

FAQs

What color are the wires on a solenoid? ›

the starter relay should have a brown wire this is perminant live, a black wire which is ground, a white/red which comes from the key, and a brown/red which goes off to the solenoid.

Does the positive wire go to the solenoid? ›

What Wire Goes Where on a Starter Solenoid? Two cables usually connect the battery to the starter: a red wire and a black or greenish-yellow one. The red wire connects the battery's positive terminal to the solenoid, while the other cable connects the battery's negative terminal to the motor.

How do you test a Polaris starter solenoid? ›

Connect a second back probe to the solenoid. Then, connect it to the positive side of the battery. You should hear an audible "click" as the connector is pushed up to complete the circuit. If you don't hear it, the solenoid has gone bad.

Does it matter which way a solenoid valve is wired? ›

The magnetic field in a solenoid has a north pole, but the polarity of a solenoid valve does not matter. That's because the polarity induced in the core of the solenoid reverses if the current in the coil reverses, so the motion of the core is the same either way.

Can you wire a solenoid backwards? ›

Does reversing polarity of a solenoid reverse plunger movement? Solenoids only operate in one direction. When the solenoid coil is energized , a fixed internal component (called the stop) becomes magnetized, thereby attracting a moving component (called the plunger ).

Does it matter which side of solenoid is positive? ›

The simple answer is that polarity does not matter on solenoid valve coils. Typically, the lead wires will be the same color so you can connect the positive terminal to either of the two wires.

Where does the red wire go on a starter solenoid? ›

The solenoid will have 2 large posts on it, and one of them should be copper colored. The positive battery cable will go to the copper colored post, and the starter cable to the other large post. It will be a large red wire.

Is there a ground wire on a solenoid? ›

If it's insulated, you will see the grounding contact sticking out from the outside of the housing of the solenoid, so you'll see four terminals (two large & two small) because you have to wire in the grounding wire.

How do you indicate the polarity of a solenoid? ›

If the current in the coil facing you is flowing in clockwise direction then its the south pole. If the current is flowing in anti-clockwise direction, then its the north pole. This can be figured out using Right hand thumb rule.

Where does the positive wire go? ›

Black: The black wire is the primary positive wire (called phase 1). Use it for the main connection to your ceiling fan, light socket, or outlet. Red: The red wire is the second positive wire (called phase 2). Only connect it to your ceiling fan, light socket, or outlet (if it needs a second positive wire).

What are the symptoms of a bad solenoid? ›

If the starter engages but does not disengage when you let go of the key, the solenoid is likely bad and the starter may suffer significant damage as a result. Sometimes your car starts, sometimes it doesn't. Intermittent operation can be a sign of a failing starter solenoid.

What does it mean when a starter solenoid just clicks? ›

If you hear a clicking noise when you can't start your car, it means the starter solenoid or relay contacts are operating, but the starter isn't cranking the engine. Some of the common causes for this issue include dead batteries, faulty starters, loose or corroded battery terminals/cables, and more.

What is the I and S on a solenoid? ›

The "S" terminal is the wire that comes from the ignition switch that is hot in the start position to activate the solenoid. The "I" terminal goes to the positive terminal on the ignition coil to give an extra boost of battery voltage to aid in starting.

How many wires are connected to a solenoid? ›

The solenoid valve on the pneumatic valve is generally three-wired. Either in terms of 24 V DC or in terms of 220 V AC, there are two wires which can lead to generation of magnetism for the coil (which is the power supply wire), and the other one is for ground connection. The two wire and four wire is rare.
